Unit One Evaluation
For unit one I have researched various photographers relating to a range of projects, including Vivian Maier, Man Ray and Daido Moriyama. By looking at lots of these photographers work I was able to mimic their photographing style, but add something from my style too.
My favourite photographer is Daido Moriyama because he takes photographs of whatever he thinks will look good. I like his work because his process of taking photos is similar to mine - I never really know what I want to take pictures of when I start, but after I have taken a few I have an idea. I found his work while I was doing research for the contrast project. I had seen his work on the page and didn't really look at it until my teacher had suggested his work to me.
Another photographer I really liked was Seung-Hwan O. he worked with film portraits and he put bacteria on the film so the fungus that grew would eat away some of the film therefore having the people in the image distorted. This photographer actually contributed to the inspiration for my second final piece in absurd with the work that was on Pinterest that showed up when I typed in 'face distortion'.
I have looked at and slightly researched many topics in photography but I have only managed to produce final pieces for 4 of my 7 personal projects. These are called;
Disguise
Abstraction
Absurd
and Contrast.
My favourite final piece from all of the personal projects is the first piece from the abstraction project. this is my favourite because I feel like it has a good theme and all of the images go really well together. I also like that they are all taken on the same device so the quality is the same (one isn't better or worse than another). I also like the fact that they are all in black and white because it makes them look a little bit older than they actually are.
Over the course of two years I have used many different techniques and different equipment. I have seen myself become more confident with some projects and less with some. Although I have not yet acquired the ability to ask people to be in my images, I think that the work I do now and will continue to do works best for me and allows me to be comfortable within photography. However, I have worked up the confidence to begin to use 'proper' cameras as the main piece of equipment I had used was my phone. For the majority of the images I had used an iPhone but I then I got a new phone and began to use that, this meant that the quality of my images improved because my new phone has 20.1mp instead of 8mp. In my first year I only really used the schools iPods because I wasn't really comfortable using anything else, so the quality of images are not that good compared to how some of my images are now.
