Street Photography-Tate Trip
On Monday 24th February 2014, we went on a trip to the Tate Modern, to see Henry Callahan and William Eggleston's Exhibitions. We were told to take photos on the way to the gallery and on our way back to school as part of our street photography project. I liked going on the trip because it gave us all an opportunity to observe they way Henry Callahan and William Egglestons way of doing and presenting photography. Also considering the fact that this was only my second time going out onto the streets and shooting the people around me. I think that this was a great opportunity to widen our knowledge and experience of street photography.
Harry Callahan
Harry Callahan was a 20th century American photographer. He was born october 22nd 1912 in Detroit, Michigan and he died March 15th 1999 in Atlanta, Georgia, US. After he dropped out of Michigan University -studying engineering- he joined a camera club where after he taught himself photography. Therre he became friends with Todd Webb. His wife, Eleanor, whom he met in 1933, became his most photographed subject appearing in most of the photos he takes(in the single photographs and the photographed sets) He said that there are 3 scenes in which he focuses his photographs on, Nature, Buildings and People. William Eggleston
William Eggleston is an American photographer. He was born July 27th, 1939 (aged 74 now) in Memphis, Tennesee, United States. When he was 15 he was sent to Webb School, a boarding establishment. His early photographic works had efforts were inspired by the work of Robert Frank a swiss photographer and french photographer Henri Carter-Bressons. |
Evaluation Of Harry Callahan's Image
This is one of my favourite images that Harry Callahan had taken. I think that this picture could show loneliness because she is standing on her own next to the tree. I like this photograph because it is in black and white which could make you feel a little spooked out. The composition of this image is mainly central but the top of the tree goes off to he left. There are a lot of layers in this image, there is the tree, then Eleanor, then there is the snow and finaly you can see the horizon. |
This is one of my favorite photos that i have taken becuase i like that the focus is on the back of the persons head and that people in the background are blurred out. The image is in color but i think it would look better in black and white. The focus of the image is not excatly central but the main subject takes up just over half of the image.

This is another one of my favorite photos, this is one of my favorite photos because i like the fact that the man in the red jumpsuit is the brightest thing in the image and is sort of the main focus. i think this image would have been better if i was standing closer so i could have gotten just the man ans the background view of London.

This is another one of my favorite photos because all of the image is in focus, and i like that you can clearly see the two girls and St Pauls Cathedral. I think this image wouldnt look as good as it does if it was in black and white, i think you wouldnt be able to notice the details in the background as much as you can when its colour.

This is my final favorite image, i like this image because it is very basic and the sign takes up all of the space in the image. i also really like this image because on the sign you can see a sort of reflection or shadow of something that was infront of the sign. I also like this image because the sign is highlighted so it stands out.
