Pinhole Photography
Pinhole photography is done by using a pinhole camera. A pinhole camera is a simple camera without a lens and a single apeture - Effectively a light proof box with a small hole in one side. Light from somewhere shines past the point and projects an inverted image on the opposing side of the camera. The smaller the hole the sharper the image but the dimmer the project image. The shutter on the camera may be manually operated made as a flap made out of light proof material to hide and reveal the pinhole. exposures range from 5 seconds to several hours. onme of the ways in which pinhole photography could be used is to capture the sun over a long period of time.

In 400bc the ideas of camera obscura as an invention was first mentioned in the 'book of optics', written by the Persian scientists Ibn Al-Hathem. the invention was simple, a small hole in a dark room where by he lit candles outside, documenting the light that passed through the pinhole. The pinhole 'process' became a method for physicists after Hathem.
In the 15th century Leonardo Da Vinci played a big part in the development of pinhole photography. He first thought that, to make an image, you needed to seal light into a box. in his writings he speaks about how to focus imagery onto transparent screen through a box, tracing it from the opposite sides.

How To Make A Pinhole camera.
A pinhole camera is made by using a light-tight container and putting a making a hole at the bottom using a needle or pin. The object you are using to make the camera needs to be painted or sprayed black on the inside. There also needs to be a flap at the bottom that covers the hole to make sure that the hole will not expose the paper to the light. You also need to make sure you paint or spray the lid so no light gets through, because it can ruin the picture. Nancy Breslin
Nancy Breslin is a photographer based in Washington DC, who specialises in black and white images of amusement parks taken with plastic pinhole camera. After spending her first career as an academic psychiatrist, she decided in 1997 to leave medicine and become an artist. Nancy has also done Cyanotypes and gum over Cyanotypes. Her largest current project is Square meals: a pinhole diary of eating out Which includes pictures of almost every meal she has eaten in a restaurant or friends home in over 10 years. Nancy Breslin has taught photography at the University Of Delaware, and given talks and workshops at a number of schools and art centres. She exhibits frequently mostly in the mid-Atlantic regions. |
Steven Pippin
Steven Pippin is an English artist, born in 1960. After completing a degree in mechanical engineering he took a foundation course in art at Loughborough College (1981-2) then studied at Brighton Polytechnic (1982-5) and the Chelsea School Of Art, in London (1987). He typically used large objects such as bath tubs, wardrobes, and washing machines converted so they work like cameras. The process of converting the objects is often filmed is displayed with the images taken at the end. |
Evaluation
In this picture i think that the main focus is on the outside of the photo because it is more clear and the man is kind of blurred out. This picture gives me the feeling of loneliness because of the black and white effect and that it looks like the person is fading out. The texture of this photo, to me looks quite smooth in places but rough in others. There are a lot of tones in the picture on the right side it is very dark and as you begin to look across to the left side it seems to get lighter-more grey- in the middle then begins to become very dark again.
