Light Painting.
What Is Light Painting?
Light painting is a photographic technique which requires exposures to be made by the camera moving or by a hand-held 'light source'. There are 3 light painting techniques, the first is called light painting, the second is called light drawing and the third is called kinetic light painting or camera painting. Light painting is using a 'handheld light to draw or colour parts of a subject or scene. It requires a slow shutter speed of at least 1 second. Light drawing is shining the light source to draw a scene by shining it directly into the camera lens. Light drawing requires a slow shutter speed of again at least 1 second. Kinetic light painting is done by moving the camera around, This could be done at night by taking the camera off the tripod and using it like a paintbrush. |
Man Ray.
Man Ray's Light Painting. Man Ray born Emmanuel Radnitzky on August 27th 1890, in Philadelphia Pennsylvania United States and died November 18th in Paris, France. Man Ray was the first American photographer to experience light painting. In 1935 Man Ray set up a camera to take a self-portrait and he used a small penlight to produce swirls and circles in the air. He thought of himself as a painter which reflects some of the thing he drew while doing light painting. Man Ray is well known for his work with photograms also called 'rayographs'. In 1935 Man Ray set up a camera to take self portraits of himself demonstraiting light painting. People just thought that it was squiggles but in 2009 a woman named Ellen Carey realised that it was his signatures. |

Light painting video
From the light painting video i have learned that you do not just have to have hand held lights and expensive cameras to produce light painting pieces. You can even use an iphone to produce the images!! I also learned that you have to keep the camera really still or the image will become dstorted. I think that this is a very interesting mini documantary because it shows other people taking the images and it was really interesting to seehow some of their photos turned out esspecially because they were taking the photos on the beach. |
Our First Try At Light Painting
This is a set of photos that we have taken to show light painting. Most of these photos have been taken with the aperture on F10 at the beginning, then we changed it to F8 to see how it would turn out and that didn't work very well so the we changed it to F4 or F4.5, which was the best aperture for the amount of light, and 10 seconds to take each picture. Some of the photo's turned out really well, but some of them were not really thought out well so the people that were drawing around the person in the photograph didn't know what to do so they were just drawing squiggly lines or simple shapes. I think that most of the images turned out really well especially the movement ones at the end of the gallery. Even some of the ones that were not thought about entirely look really good. An improvement that could be made would be to make sure that the person in the image is properly in focus because some of the people in the images are not in focus. I also think that an improvement would be if people had an idea of what they want to draw on the person in the photo because then it would look better.
Our Second Try At Light Painting
This is an image that we took during one of our double periods, I think that this image didn't really work because the people in the image are not in focus and there isn't much drawing with the lights on it. I think that because the people in the photo are jumping forward it didn't really work because there were to many seconds to take the image and jumping off of a chair doesn't take that long so because they were at the bottom of the image for so long the bottom of the image is a little bit clearer than the top of the image. In this image there is not much light painting, it is only on the right side of the image. This image was taken on F4.5 10 seconds and iso 200

This is another image we took during one of our double periods, I think that this image is really good because there is a lot of light being drawn and a lot of movement. This image was taken over a 10 second period and the flash light was flashed around 4-5 times. I think that this image is very different to any other images that we have taken because there are 4 people in this image and you can see parts of every person. This image was taken on F4.5 10 seconds and iso 200.
